“LEOMINSTER — A Fitchburg man who police said attacked them Christmas morning remained hospitalized with a bullet wound Monday.

Joseph Graham, 19, was listed in serious condition at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.

Police say a Leominster officer shot Graham in self-defense after he attacked three officers with a knife at about 11:30 a.m. on Stearns Avenue.

The Police Department has turned over the investigation to State Police assigned to District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.’s office, said Chief Peter Roddy.

“It’s an independent agency coming in, so there is absolutely no conflict of interest,” Roddy said. “We’ve got nothing to hide, so we immediately called the district attorney’s office and asked them to help investigate.”

Roddy declined to say whether any officers have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

No charges have been filed against Graham yet, Assistant District Attorney Don Xenos said Monday.

According to Early’s office, Graham was admitted to HealthAlliance Hospital/Leominster’s emergency department for a mental health evaluation Christmas Eve but ran away.

Hospital officials reported the runaway to police, who on Friday found Graham on Notre Dame Street, several hundred yards from the hospital, and a confrontation worked itself over to Stearns Avenue between Washington and Arlington streets.
